AI’s Impact on Your Career

This Week

AI and jobs—it’s the topic everyone has an opinion on, and this week we’re digging into the latest updates. I’ll walk you through two possible futures for work in an AI obsessed world, plus a new Microsoft report that shows which jobs are most at risk (and which ones AI won’t be touching anytime soon).

And if your job hunt isn’t going the way you’d hoped, I’ve got two creative approaches to building a resume that stands out.

Read on.

AI Won’t Replace You? Think Again.

I’ve been saying for a while that AI will take jobs, but that catchy cliché, “AI won’t replace you, someone using AI will”, has really stuck around. The truth is, if your work is mostly manual and repetitive (data entry, answering simple customer questions, resizing graphics) your job is at risk.

Less than a year after that slogan went viral, we’re already moving beyond the “AI as assistant” phase optimists hoped for, and into territory that looks more like direct job replacement. Even the CEOs of top companies now admit that major disruptions to the labor market are likely.

Is mass unemployment the only outcome?

Not necessarily. There are three other ways this could unfold:

AI as Equalizer

Much like the internet made it possible for anyone to start an online business, AI will allow “solo companies” to compete with larger staffed companies. One person, supported by AI agents, can manage complex work for a fraction of the cost. If labor costs stop being the barrier, small-scale entrepreneurship can become a realistic career path for many.

AI as Multiplier

This perspective accepts that most jobs will be automated but sees AI as a massive advantage for the top 10% of workers. High performers will produce 10x or even 100x more with AI’s help. If this future unfolds, your best move is to find your area of excellence and make sure you’re in that top tier.

AI as Job Creator

This might sound far-fetched, but imagine explaining to someone in the 1850s that jobs like podcast host, sustainability consultant, or brand strategist would exist today. As technology automates tasks, it creates space for careers we can’t even picture yet.

I’m curious: which of these three futures — equalizer, multiplier, or job creator — feels most real to you?

Which Jobs Are at Risk, and Which Aren’t?

A new Microsoft study analyzed 200,000 real-world Copilot interactions to calculate an "AI applicability score", a measure of how well AI overlaps with a job’s actual tasks.

High-risk roles are dominated by knowledge work and communication-heavy tasks. AI performs especially well in tasks like gathering, summarizing, and drafting. At the top of the list:

  • Interpreters and translators

  • Historians

  • Sales representatives

  • Writers, authors, proofreaders, editors, and customer service agents

Conversely, jobs least likely to be impacted involve physical labor or require hands-on human interaction, areas where AI still lags behind. These include:

  • Nursing assistants

  • Massage therapists

  • Machinery operators (like truck or tractor drivers)

  • Roofers, dishwashers, maids, and cleaners

That said, Microsoft emphasizes that AI isn't set to replace entire jobs outright. No identified role has 100% of its tasks automated. AI is more likely to augment rather than fully eliminate roles. And hey, if all else fails, we can all become roofers. Apparently, that’s one gig AI isn’t touching anytime soon.

A Resume That Gets Call Backs

Are you sending out resumes and hearing nothing? One candidate I spotted took a different route: she turned her resume into a Netflix-style site where each project plays like its own trailer.

It’s creative, memorable, and perfect for industries like marketing, design, and branding where your work is the product. If you’re getting lost in a pile of PDFs, maybe it’s time to make your resume an experience instead of just a file.

Curious how she did it? Check out her walkthrough on X.

Get Your Foot in the Door with AI

If you’ve ever stared at a job description and wondered how to make your resume scream “pick me,” this one’s for you. I came across a clever prompt that walks ChatGPT through analyzing a job posting, comparing it to your resume, spotting the gaps, and rewriting it so you’re perfectly aligned for the role.

It’s like having your own resume coach, minus the awkward small talk. Here it is:

Prompt: [RESUME]=Your current resume content

[JOB_DESCRIPTION]=The job description of the position you're applying for

Step 1: Analyze the following job description and list the key skills, experiences, and qualifications required for the role in bullet points.

Job Description:[JOB_DESCRIPTION]

Step 2: Review the following resume and list the skills, experiences, and qualifications it currently highlights in bullet points.

Resume:[RESUME]

Step 3: Compare the lists from Step 1 and Step 2. Identify gaps where the resume does not address the job requirements. Suggest specific additions or modifications to better align the resume with the job description.

Step 4: Using the suggestions from Step 3, rewrite the resume to create an updated version tailored to the job description. Ensure the updated resume emphasizes the relevant skills, experiences, and qualifications required for the role.

Step 5: Review the updated resume for clarity, conciseness, and impact. Provide any final recommendations for improvement.

The $2.7 Million Pay Gap AI Could Close

Across industries, women are 20% less likely to use AI than men. On ChatGPT’s app, 85% of users are men.

Why?

Some see AI as “cheating.” Others don’t trust it with their data or think their company wouldn’t approve. Whatever the reason, the career advantage is going to those who use it.

A UN report found women are three times more likely to have their jobs replaced by AI because they are overrepresented in roles most at risk. Yet jobs that require AI skills pay far more.

  • In the UK, AI-related roles pay 77% more than those needing a master’s degree.

  • Even outside tech, AI knowledge lifts salaries by 28% on average.

  • College graduates with AI skills are almost twice as likely to get an interview.

If you’re thinking you’re okay not using AI, here’s a bit of math for you:

Imagine you start a career at $60K. Then you add AI skills and your salary rises 28 percent. Over a lifetime, that is the difference between earning $5.2 million vs $8 million — a $2.7 million advantage!

So why aren’t more women using AI?

Studies show women are judged more harshly than men if colleagues believe they have used AI, even when the work submitted is identical. Others report they lack training or that company rules are unclear.

These challenges are real, but the benefits of using AI far outweigh them. The fastest way to get hired, earn more, and keep your career secure is to start using it now.

Every day you wait is an opportunity left on the table.

Is Your Job Becoming Obsolete?

That’s the question Greg Shove, CEO of Section, will tackle in a live event on September 9, 2–3 pm ET.

He’ll share his view of what’s ahead for knowledge work: which roles will shrink, which ones will disappear, and how workers can make themselves more valuable in the age of AI.

The truth is, AI is going to transform jobs. Some will be replaced, and many teams will run with far fewer people. The smart move is figuring out how to adapt before the change hits.
